About the SAT® Exam
The SAT® tests critical thinking and the ability to analyze and solve problems. Most colleges require the SAT® and use test scores, along with GPA, transcripts, and recommendations, to determine acceptance.
Offered seven times each year, high school students typically take the SAT® in their junior or senior year; many students take it more than once. There is no limit to the number of times you can test.
The exam lasts three hours with an additional optional 50 minute essay. The SAT® consists of two sections: evidence-based reading and writing (reading – 52 multiple-choice questions; 65 minutes, and writing & language 44 multiple-choice questions; 35 minutes) and math (58 questions; 80 minutes).
Each section earns a maximum of 800 points, for a maximum total score of 1600 points. (You cannot score less than 200 points on any one section.) There is no penalty for answering a question incorrectly.
Your official scores are provided to you and your high school within five weeks of your test date. You can also log in to http://www.collegeboard.com to access your scores.
The cost of the exam is $54.50 ($43 without the optional essay) but can vary depending on late registration, change, or standby fees
